Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum

Situated in the heart of Old Town Key West, the Ernest Hemingway Home was constructed in 1851 with native rock hewn from the grounds and is home to Key West's first pool (built by Hemingway in the late 1930s). Ernest Hemingway lived here for more than 10 years, during which time he wrote the majority of his life's work including For Whom the Bell Tolls. Step back in time: enjoy a guided tour of the unique home and wander around the lush grounds that are home to more than 60 cats (descendants of Papa's pets).

The Key West Lighthouse was built in 1847 to help ships navigate the dangerous reefs off the Keys. Visitors climb 88 iron steps to enjoy the spectacular view from the observation deck at the top of the 86 ft tower. The Keeper's Quarters (a clapboard bungalow where the keepers and their families) has been recreated with historic furniture, furnishings and photos.

Visitors to the Key West Heritage House Museum will discover a unique, Caribbean Colonial House that was built in the 1830s and occupied by the Porter family (island residents for 7 generations). The museum offers guided tours of the home where visitors will see original furnishings, unusual seafaring artifacts, rare antiques and other treasures collected by 7 generations of Porters. |
